We pass a meadow grazed by donkeys. In order to maintain the visual axis, it was decided not to afforest this plot. Further on we see a standard orchard with a temporary grain field for the yellowhammer and other field birds underneath. Things are going badly for farmland birds in Flanders. The populations of many typical farmland birds such as partridge, skylark, grey bunting and yellowhammer have plummeted over the past 30 years. This is no different in the Heuvelland. We are trying to reverse this trend by planting grain fields.
