In addition to larch and Douglas fir, Scots pine was also planted here. Scots pine, commonly referred to as Sylvester pine after its scientific name Pinus sylvestris, was widely used as pitwood in the Kempen region, but here it was planted for hop poles. A characteristic of the wood is that it creaks before it breaks.
Just over the Bommelaarsbeek, we discover an old root ball of what was once the thickest tree (4.85m circumference) of Helleketelbos, which unfortunately was struck by lightning in 1985. Counting the growth rings indicated that the tree dated back to 1830, making it as old as Belgium. During World War I, this tree served as a lookout point and was equipped with an iron staircase. The Bommelaarsbeek springs from the ditch near the half-timbered house.
