In order to defend the airfield in the 'Kleyne Vlakte' and the defence complexes in the north of 'De Zwin dunes and polders', an anti-tank ditch was constructed in the early 1940s. This happened west of the airport and is still visible here. Also in the meadow a little further on in the 'Kleyne Vlakte' you can still see the traces of the anti-tank ditch. This canal was built by the German engineers on a remnant of an old gully from the 19th century when the current forest, meadow and dune area was still a beach plain.
