The willows present here are all cultivated willows, specifically typical willows for making baskets. View the photos from left to right, from top to bottom: Photo 1: Salix x mollissima variety undulata, referred to as 'Lerenband' by the basket weavers. This is a cross between an almond willow and a goat willow; Photo 2: Salix x dasyclados, the 'German dot'. Called 'Kletters' by the basket weavers. A cross between goat willow, osier willow, and grey willow; Photo 3: Salix viminalis, Goat willow according to the ora and 'Wiedauw' according to the basket weavers. This is a very old basket-making willow, presumably imported by the Romans, possibly from Siberia; Photo 4: Salix fragilis variety Russeliana, a female cultivated clone of the crack willow. Referred to as 'Old red' by the basket weavers; Photo 5: Salix x rubens variety Basfordiana. A hybrid product of a screech willow variety (from the Balkans) and a crack willow variety (from the low countries). Called 'Yellow willows' by the basket weavers; Photo 6: Salix purpurea variety purpurea, 'Bitter willow'. Referred to by the basket weavers as 'Leentjes' or 'Lintjes'. In the 1930s, this willow grove was exploited. The willows were cut and used for basket weaving. Locally, a grove is also called 'Wiedauwbusch'. In the 1950s and 1960s, this grove was also used as a hedge-planting for hunting thickets.
