In the 12th century, the Buggenhout forest was part of a gigantic forest called 'Beuckenhoudt'. The municipality of Buggenhout owes its name to this forest. Beeches used to dominate this forest, but they have now had to make way for the sessile oak. Nowhere in Flanders will you find more sessile oaks than here. In 2013, the forest will be expanded by no less than 10 hectares. The Hollebeek meanders through the valley of the forest. Here you might be able to catch a glimpse of the rare fire salamander. Buggenhout forest is the northernmost region of Belgium where this salamander is found.
