You know them, those small paths between hamlets, from a neighborhood to the village center, or between fields and forests. Hidden among one of Europe's densest road networks, they are nowadays almost the only roads where King Car does not rule supreme. Many pedestrians, cyclists, or horse riders still find their peace there; free from all the noise of honking horns. These are Flanders' Slow Roads.
Many neighborhood and footpaths have existed since time immemorial and have been recorded in the Atlas of Neighborhood Paths since 1841. Because people used to move only on foot, Flanders was scattered with such slow roads. However, the changing living, residential, and especially mobility patterns have led to a large part of these slow roads disappearing or falling into disuse.
