Nowadays we hear everywhere the call to use our raw materials more sustainably and to use energy more sparingly. The trend to insulate more and better and to use less energy has been going on for some time.
More and more buildings are being added that have a low energy label or that are even made "passive". But what does this passive building actually mean?
A passive building actually uses the heat energy already present. This is obtained by people, the equipment they use and the optimal use of the sun's heat. In this way, there is no longer a need for an active heating system to produce heat. Hence the name passive. Only renewable and passive energy is used.
We have to keep that heat inside as much as possible. An extremely well-insulated building with carefully executed construction details is therefore necessary to avoid any cold bridge with the outside. Even the heat in the ventilated air is brought back into the building with the fresh air by means of a heat exchanger. Virtually nothing goes to waste.
Joost Vercouteren's notary office was also built with this principle. A state-of-the-art concept with concrete floor slabs equipped with concrete core activation to absorb and dissipate the excess heat via a heat pump with deep drilling. In this way, an air conditioner is avoided and the heat/cooling control is done in a passive way. The outer walls have wooden walls with a thick layer of insulation. The sunlight of the fully glazed rear façade is controlled by a blinds with slats that will prevent the building from overheating in the summer and allow the sun's rays to enter in the winter to warm up the building if necessary.
The concept of the notarial profession is built in full openness to the outside world, which is why large glass sections on the ground floor were used. In the places where the deeds are executed, there is discretion and privacy with the very closed façades on the floors.
This 21st century notarial profession applies all means to set an example to the general public in a contemporary society. Because sooner or later, all entrepreneurs will have to use the available energy sources in a more sustainable way.
