The Drongengoed Forest is the largest forest in the province of East Flanders. The forest covers 750 hectares and is mainly located in the territory of Ursel. The Drongengoed Forest is protected at the European level as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Forests and Heathlands of Sandy Flanders: eastern part.' A large part of the forest was created through plantations in the nineteenth century on an old heathland, the Maldegemveld. The Agency for Nature and Forest is currently working to restore part of the Drongengoed Forest to its original state. Historically, it was largely heath and bog, which are now being restored. The Drongengoed Forest is part of the 'Drongengoed Landscape Park.'
