The heath of the Drongengoed belongs to a rare type: the 'intermediate Atlantic heath'. A mouthful, but this type harbors just slightly more different species than the much-lauded 'purple heath' of the Kempen. With the help of European subsidies, strips were 'scraped' along the Drongengoedweg in 2009, which is the removal of the topsoil layer. This gave the seeds of the old vegetation a chance to develop again. A logical intervention for an area that has been wavering between forest and heath for 1000 years.
