Under Austrian rule, massive afforestation took place. During this afforestation, the Austrians laid out a checkerboard-shaped avenue pattern. This pattern is still clearly recognizable in the Drongengoed. Avenues, rows of trees and hedges play an important role for many species. They form connecting paths, along which plants and animals can move smoothly. For example, bats follow rows of trees and wooded edges to fly to their hunting grounds and hunt insects there.
