Putse Nut

The fen is 17 hectares in size and consists of several parts, all of which are connected to each other. The property boundary between nature reserve and private property runs almost through it. In the Middle Ages, the peat layers were excavated here. Residents of the neighbouring town of Putte transported the peat away at this location by horse and cart. Afterwards, fens were created in the excavated depressions, of which the Putse Moer is one. Louis Meurisse, of the chocolate factory of the same name, became the owner of the estate at the beginning of the 20th century. He had the domain laid out and afforested, and built a large country house with a view of the fen. That is why the name "Meurisseven" is still often used. Fens and their wet environment are important breeding sites for numerous dragonflies, and for typical amphibians such as moor frogs and natterjack toads. Both only go to the water during the mating season; The rest of the year they stay on the land. In summer you can sometimes see large groups of swallows foraging above the fens. The tree falcon also sometimes hunts dragonflies in the area.
