Chapel of The Marshal
The chapel of the Marshal was erected in memory of Field Marshal Jan-Filips-Eugeen de Merode, Lord of Herselt and Westerlo (1674-1732). As part of the forests of the Merode, the chapel was purchased by the Flemish land company in 2004.
Parts of the domain were sold on to various partners who manage it as a nature and recreation area. Natuurpunt became the owner of this chapel, among other things.
The chapel is classified as a monument. It dates from the eighteenth century and is dedicated to Mary. The architectural style is simplified late bar skirt with classic slant. This type of chapel is rare in the area. Due to its location in the center of Bergom and along the recreationally important Diestsebaan, the chapel can become a meeting place for residents and passing recreationists. The three owners of the chapel and the surrounding land, the municipality of Herselt, the N.V. Genicro and Natuurpunt agreed to restore and upgrade this site. New green plantings and resting benches were provided. The heemkring Ansfried is willing to maintain the interior of the chapel and gave advice on the exterior design. The project was carried out in consultation with Monuments and Sites. A good example of cooperation between various associations and governments. In this way, the cultural heritage of this beautiful region is preserved.
Lime trees
Small-leaved linden or winter lime was traditionally planted at chapels. The status of the lime tree dates back to pre-Christian times. The Germans and Celts had a deep reverence for trees. In the lime tree lived the Germanic goddess Freya. However, upon the advent of Christianity, she had to pack her bags and give up her hometown to Mary. For a long time, the tree cult lived strongly in popular belief and linden and oak trees were planted in important places.
A linden has heart-shaped leaves. In the spring you can pick the blossom for tea. The trees can live for hundreds of years.
