After Bernadette Soubirous had seen Mary appear in a grotto in Lourdes in 1858, such Marian grottoes were very popular. The Lourdes grotto, with a room for candles at the bottom and a niche with a statue of the Virgin Mary at the top, has been recreated numerous times in miniature in Flanders. It was built in 1874 and today is a popular resting place for hikers and cyclists.
