To keep alive the memory of the miners and of their dirty and difficult work in the black Walloon subsoil, Le Pays Noir, a bronze Miner's bust was placed in front of the cemetery wall on the Place des Oudstrijders, the former Kleine Plaats.
The Miner's Bust was designed and executed by sculptor Hendrik Muylaert. The artwork, which tries to express the miner's inner feelings, is three-dimensional and 40 cm high. It was sculpted and then cast in bronze in the Van Geert art foundry in Aalst. The bluestone pole with a pedestal on which the statue is placed comes from the quarries of Chantier Godeau in Ecaussines.
The sculpture was donated by the non-profit organisation De Mijnwerker and the unveiling took place on 22 October 1999.
