A little past our final stop, the station of Kessel, lies the Fort of Kessel. It was built between 1909 and 1912 to protect the railway line Antwerp-Herentals and the Kleine Nete. At the beginning of WWI, in October 1914, the fort immediately sustained serious damage. It proved unable to withstand the 123 Big Bertha guns fired at it by the German and Austrian army. The fort fell into German hands. Also during World War II, in May 1940, the fort was blown up and occupied by the Germans. Today, the fort is a recreational area and bat reserve. The fort is not freely accessible. However, you can walk around the fort moat or take a guided tour. For the latter, you can contact the guides association of the Fort of Kessel.
