Een beetje voorbij onze eindhalte, het station van Kessel, ligt het Fort van Kessel. Dat werd gebouwd tussen 1909 en 1912 om de spoorlijn Antwerpen-Herentals en de Kleine Nete te beschermen. Aan het begin van WO I, in oktober 1914, liep het fort meteen ernstige schade op. Het bleek niet bestand tegen de liefst 123 Dikke Bertha-kanonnen die het Duitse en Oostenrijkse leger erop afvuurden. Het fort kwam in handen van de Duitsers. Ook tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, in mei 1940, werd het fort opgeblazen en bezet door de Duitsers. Vandaag is het fort een recreatiegebied en vleermuizenreservaat. Het fort is niet vrij toegankelijk. Je kan wel rond de fortgracht wandelen of een begeleid bezoek brengen. Voor dat laatste kan je terecht bij de gidsenvereniging van het Fort van Kessel.
