During the first half of the 13th century, part of the current municipality of Saint-Gilles, then called Zwijveke, came to lie within the city walls. For the time being, the municipality intra muros used the chapel of the former Saint-Gilles hospital as a parish church. A full-fledged church was built in the course of the 13th and 14th centuries. The tower was raised in 1440 but never finished. As a result of population growth, it was decided to expand the church in the 18th century. The entire lower church was demolished and rebuilt. The 15th-century tower and choir were preserved. This explains the different orientation of the old part of the church compared to the rest of the building.
