Church of Our Lady

Description

The origin of the church comes from a legend. Around 1242, the bishop of Tournai, Walter De Marvis, created the parish. Over the years, the place of worship has undergone many changes, but there is no charter as to the origin of the real church.
On August 16, 1653, the church burned down after being struck by lightning. In 1860 it was struck by lightning for a second time and almost completely destroyed by fire. On August 28, 1865, the new church was inaugurated by Monsignor Bracq.
The main sights of the church are the magnificent pulpit, the statue of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the protected organ.
Every year, on the occasion of the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (8 September), the statue is carried in a procession. The faithful then go from chapel to chapel praying, all decorated. This procession dates back to before 1400.
The organ was built by Jan Vergaert between 1868 and 1873 from parts inherited from the bankruptcy of the organ builder Van Peteghem. It was completely transformed by Mr. Loncke in 1951. Its sideboard is made entirely of wood, covered with aluminium bronze. The pipes date from four different periods. In 1980, this organ was classified as a protected monument.
