Originally, this was the Kolisheide, named after the town of Kolis. Later, the heath was planted with mainly Scots pine, for the purpose of wood production. Since the 80s of the 20th century, attempts have been made to give the forest, in which there are still some heather remnants, a more natural character. A number of plots have been purchased by Natuurpunt for this purpose. In the western part of the forest there is a sand quarry.
