Saint John the Baptist Church

The Sint-Jan-de-Doper Church or Sint-Jan Baptist Church is a church building in the Belgian city of Tongeren in the province of Limburg. The church is located at the Sint-Jansstraat and the Minderbroedersstraat in the center of Tongeren, is situated higher, and dominates the streetscape.
The building consists of a currently integrated square southwest tower in Meuse Renaissance style, a classical three-nave ship with four bays, a transept with one bay, a neo-Romanesque choir with a straight bay and a semicircular choir closure, and side choirs flanking the choir. To the southeast of the tower is the sacristy and to the southwest of the tower is an added portal in neoclassical style that is from a later date than the tower. The tower is made of brick and has three sections, separated by marl stone water tables. Furthermore, the tower has a bell-shaped spire covered with slates, corner bands, and string courses in marl stone, wrought iron wall anchors, two marl stone round-arched pilasters in the second section, and in the third section, on each side, a round-arched bell opening in a profiled marl stone frame with relieving blocks and a brick relieving arch. The tower is also equipped with brick wall panels with between them string courses densely adorned with small marl stone cartouches and stylized floral motifs. The central nave is constructed in brick and has a profiled marl stone cornice, brick round-arched windows, and a gabled roof covered with slates. The Romanesque parts have bush hammered hard stone, round-arched windows, and round-arched pilasters at the choir and the southwest façade. The building is vaulted by a cross vault in the tower, ribbed cross vaults above the side aisles and the ship with round-arched transverse arches in the ship, a wooden ceiling above the transept, and a wooden barrel vault above the choir.
