St. John's Church was founded in the 12th century by the tanners, who lived in this part of the city. The tanners had Saint John as their patron saint.
In 1606 the tower collapsed. This was rebuilt in Maasland Renaissance style. In 1752 the dilapidated nave was demolished and replaced by a new classicist nave.
After the French Revolution, the church served as a meeting place for the city council. From 1836 it became a parish church again.
In 1888 the choir, transept and aisles were demolished and rebuilt in Neo-Romanesque style to a design by architect Mathieu Christiaens (°1865 - †1934). In 2011, a thorough restoration campaign led by architect Michel Janssen was completed.
