Little is known about the old church of Buggenhout. In 1500, the presumably wooden church was replaced by a stone one. In the 18th century, the church was further enlarged. The interior of the church is adorned with beautiful polychrome neo-Gothic murals from the late 19th century. It is one of the few churches where the murals are not covered by a layer of white plaster. In the past, churches were a bit more colorful than they are now.
