The Malakoff Tower was built in 1854 and is an exact copy of typical medieval keeps. Curiously, the tower was named after a famous battle that took place on September 7, 1855 during the Crimean War. French and English were then fighting the Russians in Ukraine. The Battle of Malakhov was won by the Allies, giving them 'free rein' to capture the port city of Sevastopol. A local gin baron had this tower erected. He once had the Battle of Malakoff re-enacted during what seems to be a memorable garden party. Since then, the tower has borne this name. Such a building is called a foil or folly. And this is certainly the most famous film in the region.
