Waasmunster is called the mother parish of the Waasland. It was already Christianized around 800 AD(4). With the founding of Roosenberg Abbey on the banks of the Durme, it became one of the ecclesiastical centers of the Waasland.
The current Church of Our Lady and Saint Peter would date back to the 12th century but was rebuilt several times in Gothic style in the 15th-early 16th century. The robust west tower is said to date from 1430.

From 1745 there was a congregation of Marian sisters in Waasmunster. They mainly focused on the care of the sick and poor. From 1822 they moved into the monastery in the Kerkstraat. Between 1981-1985 a completely new monastery was built to the design of the Dutch Benedictine Hans Van der Laan. The chapel in neo-baroque design from 1877 was preserved.
