Along the Bruges-Ghent canal there are several nature reserves consisting of grasslands and marshes. The recognized nature reserve "De Leiemeersen" is undoubtedly the most valuable area of these. The name refers to the (disappeared) river Zuidleie. The nature reserve is owned by the Flemish Community and is managed by the non-profit organisation Natuurpunt. Many of the plant species that are listed here have a label "unique location in West Flanders". Furthermore, fishing herons, kingfishers, dragonflies, frogs, butterflies and reed birds can be seen from the towpath. Due to the vulnerability of the site, there is no free access, but there is a system of guided tours.
