A basilica is a church that is singled out. It is a title conferred by the pope on certain sanctuaries, for example for certain pilgrimage churches. The adoration of Our Lady of Dadizele dates from as far back as the 14th century. Pilgrims came to seek refuge and comfort from the miraculous statue.
In the interior of this Neo-Gothic church, nine paintings represent the legends that have to do with Dadizele. Charles the Bold (1469) and Maximilian of Austria (1478) came to visit this city.
In 1481, the mortal remains of the knight John, feudal lord of Dadizele, were buried in the basilica. Since 1982 (500 years after his death), people can admire many things in the crypt that belonged to him, among them his sword and his gauntlet.
Around the basilica there is a brief tour of one kilometre or a longer tour of four kilometres. While taking the ‘grand tour’, one passes in front of chapels and fourteen stations; the shorter tour takes you along the seven sorrows of the Virgin. At the side of the basilica in the park of the Rosary, you will find a statue of the Virgin by Harry Elström. If you want to, take the time, a little time to stop for a moment.
