Statue of Our Lady of Halle

Description

This statue was donated in 1267 by Sofia of Thuringia. The statue was part of the inheritance Sophia had received from her mother, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. The event is depicted on the stained glass windows of the Chapel of Our Lady.
The image depicts Mary breastfeeding the baby Jesus. This is where the close bond between mother and child becomes visible. The theme dates back to early Christian and the first Byzantine art.
When the city was besieged in 1489 and in 1580, Mary is said to have caught the cannonballs in her lap from the city walls. Since then, her face would have been blackened by the powder vapor. In reality, the statue's head and hands used to be silvered. The oxidation of the silver may explain the black color of the image.
