Strubbe Brewery

Brewery Strubbe, formerly known as De Maagd van Gent, is a Belgian family brewery located in the West Flanders municipality of Ichtegem.

In 1830, Carolus Strubbe started a farm-brewery called De Maagd van Gent in Ichtegem. At that time, many brewers grew their own necessary ingredients during the summer months to be used for brewing in the winter months. Carolus Strubbe was succeeded by his son, who in turn was succeeded by his son Medard. This third generation changed the name to the current name Brewery Strubbe. His only son Aimé took over the brewery.
Until the end of World War I, only top-fermented beer was brewed, two types, regular beer and dobbelbier. Aimé Strubbe then began, like many breweries in Belgium, to brew bottom-fermented beers, first Bock and then pilsner. Additionally, the popular Hengstenbier was brewed. The old recipe for this beer is the basis for the current Ichtegem's Oud Bruin. Aimé was succeeded by his two sons, Gilbert Strubbe, who became the brew master, and his brother Etienne Strubbe, who was responsible for sales and administration.
The cousins Marc Strubbe and Norbert Strubbe belong to the sixth generation of owners. In 2008, Stefan Strubbe fully took over his father Norbert's responsibilities.
Until 1999, water and lemonade were also produced at the brewery, but production was halted to allow for the expansion of the bottling line.
