Good to Mullem

Description

Immediately on the left side of the street lies the Goed te Mullem. It owes its name to the landowner Lodewijk van Mullem according to a lease contract from the year 1388.
In the land book of Sint-Eloois-Vijve from the year 1764, we see that this estate already counted six buildings at that time. It can be established that quite a few have been added since then. There was expansion and renovation so that hardly anything original from the 18th century can be discerned anymore. To the south along the street in front of the farm, there was a 20th-century tobacco barn and a zwingelarij stood at the access gate. The building along the street next to the current entrance gate shows many construction phases. The house is somewhat unusually located on the west side of the yard with its facade facing east, as also represented in the land book.
On April 28, 1905, Honoré Lambrecht from Wielsbeke is registered as the new resident. On the night of July 21, 1905, this house was completely burned down by an arsonist and was shortly rebuilt afterward. In 1991, the house was thoroughly renovated. In 2019, the horse stable, cow sheds, and the old transverse barn on the north side of the yard were demolished to be rebuilt into the current farm shop with shed. The structure of the farm shop has the same pattern as the former structure of the hayloft. Completely to the northwest next to the estate, there is a large flax barn that is now used as a fruit storage place. To the west behind the house, there is a type of water reservoir with a workshop dating from around 1940.
At that time, tulip bulb cultivation was done on the farm for a while.
For our region, this farm should be considered among the larger ones. It once covered 33 ha, and the draft power was ensured by 5 horses. The last horse left the farm in 1972. At the height of flax processing, it was also an important flax retting site, thanks to the many Leiemeersen that the farm had.
Today, the emphasis is primarily on the cultivation of apples and pears that are sold in the farm shop along with many other farm and regional products.
