The beautiful woods of Poperinge and Watou, just a short distance from the French border, date back to the Middle Ages. Its name reflects its lovely hilly appearance: "Helle" means hillside and 'ketel' refers to the valley!
At the foot of the hill, in the valley of Bommelaarsbeek, wild roses, hawthorns, and wild cherry trees grow. There are also pedunculate oaks, common ashes, hornbeams, maples, chestnuts, Scots pines, and larches. In terms of wildlife, amphibians such as the crested newt, the palmated newt, the brown and green frogs coexist with weasels, ferrets, stoats, and foxes.
The "Helleketelbos" is managed by the Nature and Forest Agency, which is currently developing another 15 hectares of woodland.
