Le joli bois de Poperinge et Watou, à une petite encablure de la frontière française, date du Moyen Âge. Son nom reflète son bel aspect vallonné : "Helle" signifie flanc de colline et ‘ketel’ fait référence à la vallée !
Au pied de la colline, dans la vallée du Bommelaarsbeek, poussent roses sauvages, aubépines, merisiers des bois. On y voit aussi chênes rouvres, frênes communs, charmes, érables, châtaigniers, pins sylvestre et mélèzes. Côté faune, les amphibiens tels le triton crêté, le triton palmé, la grenouille brune et verte y côtoient la belette, le putois, l’hermine et le renard.
Le "Helleketelbos" est géré par l’Agence Nature et Bois, qui aménage actuellement encore 15 hectares de bois.
