Hundreds of Germans stayed in the Honsemhoeve during the First World War. Bodegem was located on the important Brussels-Ghent train connection in the period of the First World War and was therefore overrun by German soldiers for four years. Troops, weapons and wounded, it all passed through Bodegem. The German soldiers claimed the railway in the summer of 1914 and guarded it day and night. All those soldiers had to find shelter at night. That is why it was decided to house all the soldiers in the nearby farms. The families who lived there simply had no choice. At one point, no fewer than 100 Germans stayed in the Honsemhoeve. The officers slept inside, but the soldiers stayed in the stables or even in the courtyard.
