Shortly after the First World War, the idea was formulated in France to build a road along the old front line from the Vosges to Nieuwpoort in order to preserve the memory of this front. As this idea proved unfeasible, the French Touring Club proposed in 1921 to erect red Alsatian granite demarcation poles designed by the French sculptor and veteran Paul Moreau-Vauthier at the points where the front line crosses the main roads. This proposal was immediately supported by the Royal Touring Club of Belgium and at the end of 1921 a fund-raising campaign was launched with a view to erecting 28 poles to mark the places where the enemy had penetrated furthest on national soil.
