The bond of De Vroey with the Our Lady Church is primarily one of artistic passion. Countless times throughout his life, he has drawn and painted the church.
Jozef De Vroey passed away at the age of 87 on March 16, 1999, in his sickbed in Leuven. In his homily for the funeral at the Our Lady Church on Monday, March 22, 1999, Dean Paul Eerlings emphasized De Vroey's certainty in a life on the other side of death: “This faith in resurrection lived very strongly in Father Jozef De Vroey. His desire was to once again be united with his father and mother when his earthly life had come to an end.”
