The so-called drifting dunes or river dunes were created during the ice ages, when sand from the dry riverbeds was blown up and piled up next to the actual river course. The sandy soil allowed arable farming here, which was usually impossible in the rest of the wet clayey lakes. Springels was once famous for its 'white wheat', but later they mainly grew corn here. Now you will mainly find the dry types of grasslands here, an ideal habitat for rabbits.
