Castle of Obsinnich

The castle and estate of Obsinnich located by the Gulp was an allodial property, owned by the Rhoe family of Obsinnich in the 14th century. From the mid-15th century, it belonged to the van Eynatten family. According to some authors, there was a fortress on this site from the 8th century, which was captured by John I of Brabant in 1285 and completely burned down after the Battle of Woeringen in 1288. No traces of this structure remain. The old core of the building is thought to date back to the period when the van Eynatten family acquired the property; only a few elements in the substructure remain from this castle. Winand van Eynatten, lord of Obsinnich from 1619, expanded the castle with two perpendicular wings; the date 1641 on a weather vane likely refers to this construction campaign. Through the marriage of Cathérine-Elisabeth van Eynatten to Guillaume-Théobald d'Eynatten de Remersdael in the early 17th century, the lordships of Obsinnich and Remersdaal were united. In 1721, the estate came into the possession of the de Furstenberg family, until about 1950. Baron Clément-Auguste-Egon de Furstenberg carried out significant renovations to the castle in 1880: the central wing was extended to the southwest, the tower that had fallen into ruins was rebuilt, and the side walls were raised.
