Obsinnich Castle is a castle located near the Belgian village of Remersdaal, in the extreme southeast of the Limburg Voer region. Obsinnich is a location of Remersdaal, which itself is named after the castle.
The name Opsinnich means that this place is located higher than, or at least more upstream of, the hamlet of Sinnich. Sinnich is a name with the suffix -ich , which probably already existed in Gallo-Roman times, but the derivation is not certain. It could go back to a form such as Seniacum, for example, but there are also other possibilities.
Opsinnich is the origin of the knightly families Rhoe of Opsinnich and van Eynatten of Opsinnich, who inhabited the castle or its predecessor from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries respectively. Its location dates back to a medieval seigneury, an allodium, originating from the fortified house inhabited by a member of the Scavedries family clan, who bore the name of the Red of Sinnich. We know that he took part as a knight in the battle of Woeringen.
