The expansive, rolling grassland characterizes the park of Vorst. The calm, playful atmosphere that prevails on sunny days stands in stark contrast to the origin of this park: just like the Josaphat and Jubelpark, it is one of the many prestige projects funded by Leopold II with the usurious profits from the exploitation of the Congo Free State.
At the end of the 19th century, Leopold II pressured various local governments to expropriate green spaces in their territories. He provided the funds, offered free renowned landscape architects, engaged developers, and worked closely with city planner Victor Besme. The public green served as a valve through which the residents of the densely populated neighborhoods around could relieve their stress. Additionally, it also led to an increase in the value of the surrounding plots. Wide avenues with prestigious houses opened up the entire area.
In the following years, the park of Vorst will undergo a serious and necessary restoration. Thoughtful water management will prevent flooding and counteract the erosion of the paths. A green theater, a new playground, and dining options will give this intensively used park a second youth.
