The King Albert Monument is a war memorial in the Belgian coastal city of Nieuwpoort. It stands just outside the old town center, on the right bank of the IJzer, near the sluice complex the Ganzepoot. The monument was erected in 1938, designed by Julien de Ridder, in honor of King Albert I and the Belgian troops in World War I.
The monument is circular in shape, with a diameter of 30 meters. It has ten columns with a flat cross-section of 1 meter by 2 meters, built from bricks from the IJzer plain. On top is a circular beam, with a circumference of 100 meters. On this ring beam lies a walkway with orientation tables. The whole structure stands on a cross-shaped terrace of 2500 m².
In the central courtyard stands a statue of King Albert I on horseback. The equestrian statue is the work of Karel Aubroeck. In front of the Albert Monument, a memorial for the English troops has been erected. This monument consists of a memorial column, with the names of the fallen, guarded by lions.
The building was inaugurated on July 24, 1938, in the presence of King Leopold III, Queen Elisabeth, Prince Karel, Prince Boudewijn, and Princess Josephine-Charlotte. The entire structure was also classified as a protected monument in 1999.
To the north of the monument is the Nieuport Memorial.
