At this bustling traffic intersection you can see how this old industrial zone is being gradually transformed. This is most clearly demonstrated by the trendy white EKLA residential blocks, built on the former site of the Vandenheuvel brewery, which produced Ekla beer up until 1974.
Vandepereboomstraat (Rue Vandepereboom) and the railway line form a clear frontier between Old Molenbeek and the more recent urban districts in the west of Molenbeek. The installation of a railway line and the freight station Brussels-West around 1870 influenced the continued (industrial) development of the districts along its tracks.
Since its closure in 1984 the site of the freight station has been largely undeveloped. Nonetheless, it is a great opportunity to create a green zone for walkers, cyclists and local residents.
