Hawthorn:
Latin Name: Crataegus
Characteristics: The shrub can grow up to 4.5 m high and the tree grows up to 12 meters. There are thorns on the branches and each leaf has 3 to 7 lobes that are toothed. The leaves have a long stem. The fruits ripen in autumn. The wood is tough and very hard.
Habitat: The shrub is often planted as a hedge around meadows. It is also planted in gardens. In nature, it grows on the edge of the forest.
Flower: In May, the plant bears numerous flowers. They are white or pink. The flowers attract bees.
Fruit: Small red fruits with a pit in it
Reproduction: The flowers are pollinated by insects. The fruits are eaten by birds and mammals, which thus ensure the dispersal of the seeds.
Fun fact: The red currants are used to make medicines. These are good for diseases related to the blood and heart. You can make tea from the young leaves.
