Borre or borne is an old word for source. The name Steenborre refers to a spring near a stone. The Steenborrebeek is one of the streams that carry the water from the flank of the Bosberg to the Dender.
Further up the slope, not far from the source, the farm 'Hof ten Steenborre' was built in the middle of the 19th century. The water from the spring was used on the farm for a long time.
Headwaters of streams that originate in a forest are ecologically particularly valuable. The water of these streams is very suitable for larvae of tube damselflies, stone flies and mayflies, aquatic animals that need very pure water. Further from the source, the water can be contaminated by leaching fertilizers and pesticides. Due to the stricter fertilization standards around the forest, the water quality of the stream is still good here.
