Was there ever a medieval 'castle' in Bergenmeersen? The archaeological research during the works in 2012-2013 a wide, circular moat was discovered that confirms the old suspicion. We know from historical sources that this place used to be called 'motte', an old word for artificial hill. This has been taken into account during the works in Bergenmeersen. Behind the lock, instead of one, two creeks have been dug that make a bend around the archaeological site. The site was also reinforced with quarry stone so that it does not wash away.
