In Bergenmeersen you will find unique freshwater salt marshes with open water and reeds. Less well known is that willow flood forest also grows on a fresh salt marsh. These forests are flooded during spring tides, but the willows can handle that perfectly. The trees grow close together, sometimes branches break off or a tree uproots. The result is an impenetrable forest intersected with gullies. The whole thing looks a lot like a tropical mangrove forest.
