House of the Ghent historian and factor (= poet-chairman) of the rhetoric chamber Maria T'Heeren, Marcus van Vaernewyck (1518-1569). His best-known works are the History of Belgis (=Flanders) and his eyewitness account of the Iconoclasm in Of the tumultuous times in those Netherlands and primarily in Ghent 1566-1568. Since 1880, his bust has been placed on the gable end, below it his motto "Laet vaeren nydt," supported by the tail of two dolphins (a symbol of esteem and readiness for battle). In the 17th century, the house was known as De bonte mantele.
