In the meadow to the west of Gaasbeek Castle you can see a beautiful example of a spring amphitheatre. Where the well was once active, soil was washed away, after which the higher slope material slid down in the form of a bowl. You can still see that bowl near the tree that stands in the field. This is what geomorphologists call a source amphitheater. This spring is located at the same height (one speaks of source level) as the more well-known spring in the area, under the Saint Gertrude Chapel to the SE of the castle. It is very likely that these springs originated on the same horizontal clay layer at this altitude, here at +/- 50m above sea level.
