Here you cross the Kleine Beek. The path runs over a thick layer of peat. Peat is formed in swamps and is a wet, oxygen-poor and spongy type of soil made up of plant material. On the wet peat grow special plant species such as cinquefoil (photo), sphagnum moss, marsh weed and water trefoil. Dried peat, better known as peat, is flammable and was often mined as fuel in the past.
