After the death of Father Damien in 1889, the birthplace was purchased by the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts with the intention of establishing a monastic community in it.
In the two living rooms there is another bed, the linen case, tables, oil lamps, the fireplace, the party table and a pedigree. The monastery chapel, furnished in the former kitchen, has been preserved. In this chapel is the coffin in which Father Damien was buried in 1889 and in which he was transferred to Belgium in 1936 by the school ship Mercator.
