The castle originally had a military function. It served as an outpost for the Duchy of Brabant to the nearby lordship of Mechelen. The then gentlemen took an active part in the political and military life of Brabant.
The castle of Relegem is a moat water castle. Along the northwest side, the moat is interrupted and thus has an uneven U-shape.
