Blue Lifeline, green corridor
The Kleine Nete has its source in a high moor area in Mol and flows diagonally through our province. It merges as a tidal river in Lier with the Grote Nete to form the Beneden-Nete.
An important tributary of the Kleine Nete is the Bollaak. This stream is home to numerous rare species of fish, including the bullhead. This small fish does not have an air bladder so it spends its life on the bottom. During food hunting, it uses its pectoral fins as oars. Just like the stickleback, it makes a nest and takes care of its little ones. Because of its presence, Europe has designated the Kleine Nete Valley as a Habitats Directive area as an additional protection.
The Kleine Nete valley is used as a migration route by all animals and plants and also as a migration route by birds. In this way, isolated populations are reconnected to each other.
